Trimming your wick is essential because it allows you to control how much air flows through the flame.

Prevalent Reasons Candle Wicks Should Be Trimmed

Candle wicks should be trimmed to prevent them from becoming too long, which will cause the candle's wax to pool in the center of the candle. When this happens, you can expect your flame to be weak and your candle to burn unevenly.

Another reason why you might want to trim your candle wicks is that they could be too long. Also, if there is a lot of wax left on the bottom of your wick and it has not been trimmed down yet, it could cause an unwanted build-up of wax that could get stuck in the top of your jar.

Finally, if you have a tall jar and are using a large amount of wax, you may need to trim down your candle wick so that it does not stick out beyond the edge of your jar.

Different Ways to Trim Candle Wicks

There are a few different ways you can trim your candle wick:

Scissor Trimming

This is the most common way people trim their wicks because it's quick and easy. First, place your scissor over one end of the wick so that it extends past the opening where you put it into your candle. Then use scissors or a knife to cut off anywhere from 1/8 inch up to 1/4 inch from either side of the wick at an angle that extends out from its base so that it doesn't hang down too far. This will help keep your candle burning evenly on all sides and prevent any wax from dripping into your flame.

Knife Trimming

This is similar to scissor trimming, except that you'll use a knife instead of scissors because it requires less finesse. After placing your knife over one end of the wick and extending it past the opening where you put in your candle, use a single hand to cut off anywhere from 3/16 inch up to 1/8 inch from either side of that portion of the wick at an angle along which it extends out from its base so that it doesn't hang down too far.

Candle Wick Trimmers

Candlewick trimmers are available in various designs They're used to trim candle wicks to the right length. The most commonly used trimmers are the double-edged razor style and the single-edged screwdriver style.

The double-edge razor style is used for cutting straight along the sides of the wick, making it easier to adjust each time you trim your candle wick. 

The screwdriver style is used for cutting straight across the top of the wick and leaves you with more options on how close you want to trim your wick before burning it.
